Description
A researcher from the University of Colorado claims to have observed four magpies exhibiting funeral-like behavior near the body of a dead comrade. One approached the corpse, pecked at it, then stepped back. Another followed. Then one of the magpies flew off and returned with some grass, which it laid beside the corpse. After standing for a few seconds, they flew off. Others claim to have observed similar behavior, but whether this is a display of emotion in the birds, unscientific anthropomorphism based on what the observers wished to see, or whether it actually happened at all, is up for debate among the scientific community.
