Description
Dungeness crabs are stacked for sale on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.
The Dungeness crabs inhabit eelgrass beds and water bottoms on the west coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California. It's name comes from the port of Dungeness in Washington state. They grow up to 8 inches across their wide hard shell. Their maximum life expectancy (when not put on ice) is about ten years, but most commercially caught Dungeness crabs are about four years old. In 2009 the Dungeness crab was designated the state crustacean of Oregon.
