Description
Ferdinand, a 1971 VW Super Beetle, made its LeMons debut in the 2012 Sears Pointless race at Sonoma. The car's most unusual feature is the creative solution the Hella Shitty racing team came up with for the problem of drivers of varying heights. Instead of an adjustable seat, which would be far too normal an answer, the car was outfitted with a second set of controls on the right side and set up so seating on one side is for taller drivers and the other for shorter drivers.
The 24 Hours of LeMons is an endurance race series for cars that are bought and prepped for the track for $500 USD or less. Just about anything with four wheels that was street legal when it was made and passes the safety inspection is welcome. The rules do let you spend more for the wheels, brakes, and required safety gear, but if the judges decide the basic car is worth more than $500 you'll be penalized one lap for each $10 they decide you've gone over. No prior racing experience or training is required - if you've got a driver's license and an old beater, you're ready to race.
