Description
This Dall sheep stands atop a hill overlooking the Denali Park Road in Denali National Park, Alaska.
Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses six million acres of Alaska's wilderness almost directly north of Anchorage. It was established in 1917 at Mount McKinley National Park, but was renamed to Denali when it was combined with the Denali National Monument, creating the Denali National Park and Preserve, in 1980.
Male Dall sheep, called rams, have large curling horns that distinguish them from the smaller horned females. The population in Denali National Park is one of the few in North America that is not hunted and still shares its range with a natural complement of large predators. This makes the sheep living in Denali of special interest to wildlife experts.
