Description
Modern trains are usually over 6,000 feet in length but occasionally something unusual comes through the Tehachapi Pass, like this pair of train-less Union Pacific locomotives.
Upwards of 40 trains per day from both major railroads serving the western United States pass over these tracks. The Tehachapi Pass between Mojave and Bakersfield, California is one of the busiest sections of railroad in the world. These twin ES44AC were on their way down the mountain from Mojave, likely to be used as “helpers” - additional locomotives used to help a train over extreme grades - on an eastbound train waiting on the Bakersfield side of the pass.
