Flying Squirrel? Animal skin? Proof that the ancients had automobiles? We will probably never know the meaning of the ancient petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock State Historic Park.
Newspaper Rock State Historic Park is located in southeastern Utah and is one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs in the world. Petroglyphs are created by carving into a rock surface, as opposed to petrographs which are drawn or painted on a rock face.
The etchings in the sandstone at Newspaper Rock record approximately 2,000 years of human activity, including the Ancient Pueblo, Archaic, Basketmaker, and Fremont cultures. It also includes inscriptions from modern Americans with some pieces dated from the first half of the 20th century.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
