Description
Chicago's towers loom over an onlooker at Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park.
Buckingham Fountain is one of the largest fountains in the world. Dedicated in 1927, it was inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles. The fountain was designed by Edward H. Bennett, and the statues were created by Marcel F. Loyau. It was donated tot he city by Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother and its official name is the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain.
The destruction caused by the Chicago Fire led to the largest building boom in the nation, and today the city is world renown for it's stunning architecture. The world's first skyscraper, the 10-story tall Home Insurance Building, was built in the city in 1884, and it is home to the second tallest building in the United States, the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower.
