Description
Corporate sponsorships are a staple in road racing, but it's a safe bet that Amazon.com and It's-It Ice Cream didn't pay to have their logos slapped on the body of this 1966 Volvo 122 at the 24 Hours of LeMons race in Sonoma, California.
The Volvo 122S was known as the Amason when it was introduced in Sweden in 1956. After a trademark settlement with German motorcycle manufacturer Kreidler, the name was changed to the new spelling in Sweden and exported models took on the 120 Series designation.
The 24 Hours of LeMons is an endurance race for cars that are bought and prepped for the track for $500 USD or less. Just about anything with four wheels that was street legal when it was made and passes the safety inspection is welcome. The rules do let you spend more for the wheels, brakes, and required safety gear, but if the judges decide the basic car is worth more than $500 you'll be penalized one lap for each $10 they decide you've gone over. No prior racing experience or training is required - if you've got a driver's license and an old beater, you're ready to race.
