Description
Horseshoe curves are always a popular place to watch trains. The tracks in Caliente come down a steep grade from Tehachapi and make a 180-degree turn through this crossing to continue on their way to Bakersfield.
This Union Pacific AC44CW came down from the green hills of the Tehachapi Mountains on a wet and cold February afternoon. The hills of Southern California spend most of their time in the shades of yellow-brown that give the state it's “Golden State” nickname, but for a few short weeks each winter they become covered in a carpet of green.
UP 6285 has been making trips through California's hills since 1995 as Southern Pacific #242, just one year before SP was swallowed up by the Union Pacific, and had doubtlessly crossed over Caliente-Bodfish Road at this crossing many times since then.
