Description
Two tugboats are tied to the dock in front of the massive cruise ship. The ship may have the power to cross oceans, but it needs the small tugs to help it maneuver in the harbor.
Instead of rubber bumpers, old tires are still often used as fenders to cushion tugboat hulls from impacts with the vessels they push. Not all tires are created equal, though. Some tugs use truck or heavy equipment tires, but it has been said that used aircraft tires can last up to ten times longer - of course the source for that statistic is a company that only sells used aircraft tires.
The Port of Tauranga is the largest port in New Zealand. It is located In the emerald green Tauranga Harbour of the Bay of Plenty. Cruise ships visiting the port between 1977 and 2015 were often guided to the dock by the tugboat Kaimai.
