A long day is winding down on the Mojave subdivision. Workers wait beside the maintenance train for the oncoming freight. Soon they'll finish up their work and be heading home for the night.
Union Pacific's Mojave subdivision is the 180-mile section of track between Bakersfield and West Colton, California and connects the San Joaquin valley with the Los Angeles basin. Two impressive geologic features separate those two points: the Tehachapi Mountains and the Cajon Pass through the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains. These two mountain ranges are some of California's favorite places for railroad photography.
It takes a lot of work to keep the tracks in good condition. This Union Pacific maintenance train's lights shine as it waits for a freight train to pass. Once clear, the workers will continue their track work and ensure that the traffic keeps moving on this busy Union Pacific line in the Tehachapi Mountains.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
