Description
Stormy skies over the Teton Range and Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park.
Grand Teton National Park was established in 1929, At the time, it consisted of the Teton Range and six lakes a the base of the mountains. John D. Rockafeller Jr., son of the founder of Standard Oil, visited the area in the late 1920s and wanted to preserve Jackson Hole (the valley adjacent to the park) from commercial exploitation. He began buying property with the intent of turning it over to the National Park Service, but when the residents of Jackson Hole discovered the plan they were strongly opposed to it and the plan could not approval from Congress. President Franklin D. Roosevelt utilized the Antiquities Act, which did not require Congressional approval, to create the Jackson Hole National Monument using land donated by Rockerfeller and property from the Teton National Forest. The monument and park were finally combined in 1950.
