Description
Drayden Van Dyke rides atop Powder in the seventh race at Santa Anita Park on an October afternoon. Drayden started racing in the fall of 2013 and in 2014 was named the leading apprentice jockey in the country. Out of 653 starts in 2018, he had 148 wins, 88 seconds, and 92 third place finishes. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, arguably the horse racing capital of the world where the famous Kentucky Derby is held each year, and subsequently found his way to California where his racing career began, He won his first race in November of 2013 at Hollywood Park.
Jockeys start out as apprentices, riding horses for trainers. As professionals they tend to be freelancers, being hired by owners and trainers for a fee and a percentage of the winnings. Jockeys need the rare combination of light weight combined with the strength and agility to control a 1,000-pound horse while pushing the animal to run at upwards of 40mph. Most weigh between 110 and 115 pounds and stand at about 4'-10".
