Artist's Description
The Osprey's feet have evolved into deadly fish-catching machines. Their talons are completely round which makes them ideal for piercing deeply into the flesh. Their outer toe is reversible, allowing it to grasp fish with two toes on each side of the body instead of three on one and one on the other as almost all other raptors. (Owls are the other exception.) This allows them to get a much firmer grip on their prey. They even have backwards-facing scales on their toes which act as barbs to help them hold on to slippery fish.
