Artist's Description
Colors in the desert soil tell the story of 50 million years of geologic history. Each color is a remnant of a specific climate, their width measuring time in thousands of years.
Although called a desert, Oregon's "high desert" is technically classified as scrubland or steppe due to it receiving an average of 15 inches of rain per year. Compared to Portland's 3-1/2 feet of annual rainfall, though, you can see why the people of Oregon refer to it as desert.
Erosion has carved fingers into the hillside at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Painted Hills is the most popular part of the monument, the colorful striations drawing sightseers and photographers from all over the country. Colors change with the light and weather, making no two visits to the park the same.
About Darin Volpe
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
