Artist's Description

This American Bison settled down for a nap near the banks of the Yellowstone River.

The largest land animal in North America, it was declared the national mammal of the United States in may of 2016. Once numbering in the millions, their population was decimated by the late 1800's down to only a few hundred. Conservation efforts over the past 100 years have seen those numbers rebound and the population is now estimated to be around 500,000. Yellowstone's bison are special because, unlike most of those 500,000, those 5,000 were never cross-bred with cattle and are pure descendants of the bison that have lived on that land since prehistoric times.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive.
