Description
Awww, what a cute little bird. Sure it is...until you see it swoop down from its perch, pounce on a mouse, snap its neck, then take it to the nearest fence and impale it on a strand of barbed wire.
Humans have a way of forgetting just how viscous nature really is. Loggerhead Shrikes are also known as butcherbirds due to the fierce way they hunt. These little nine-inch songbirds will eat insects like grasshoppers and crickets, and they'll also go for larger prey including lizards, mice, frogs, and other small birds. They will pierce their victim's neck and give them a good shake to snap the spine. After killing their prey they will carry it off and impale it onto sharp objects like twigs and barbed wire and save it for later.
