Description
Kestrels are America's smallest and most common falcons. They feed primarily on insects, lizards, mice, voles, and small birds. They generally catch prey on the ground by waiting for prey to come by it's perch, but they have been known to catch birds in the air. These are extremely skittish birds, making a close approach for photography whether on foot or in a vehicle impossible.
This American Kestrel is a female, identified by her brown wings and barred tail.
