Artist's Description

Perched on the northern tip of the Greek Isle of Santorini, Oia is built on a steep slope of the volcanic caldera. In July of 1956 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake destroyed about 300 buildings and damaged more than 1,000. After the earthquake, the village was rebuilt and became a tourist destination.

Oia is carved out of the cliffs, and houses built for Venetian sea captains can be seen above as well as the villager's houses built into the volcanic caves of the crater. It is said that the city was painted in white and blue in defiance of the Ottoman Empire's refusal to allow the Greek flag to be flown - and so the entire town was painted in the flag's colors.

About Darin Volpe

Darin Volpe

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
