Artist's Description

While I was driving the auto route through the Kern National Wildlife Refuge in California's San Joaquin Valley looking for birds on the water (and keeping from driving my car into said water,) my companion spotted a small red bird perched at the top of a tree beside the road. It stayed for only a few seconds before flying out over the ponds.

The Vermilion Flycatcher is a rare visitor to California's San Joaquin Valley. Most only come a little way north of the Mexican border, but they have occasionally been seen as far north as Washington.
