Description
In downtown Middlebury, Vermont, on Main Street where Highway 7 meets Seymour Street, you'll find the beautiful Congregational Church of Middlebury. The Protestant church opened its doors the last day of May of 1809. The clock was added in 1852 when the Town of Middlebury decided that its people needed a public timepiece. To this day someone makes the climb up the steeple once a week and all year around to wind the mechanism. The steeple has had major restoration done twice, once in 1949 and again in 1988 when much of the exterior woodwork and clock faces had to be replaced.
The town of Middlebury was charted in 1761 and settled just after the American Revolution. It is on the western part of Vermont, about 35 miles southwest of Montpelier, and is the shire town (county seat) of Addison County. The name of the town comes from its location between New Haven and Salisbury. As of the 2010 census the population was 8,494.
