Description
The 21st Century has arrived, and still Seattle's iconic Space Needle points to the future.
As the Soviets put Sputnik in orbit in the late 1950s, Americans needed the message that the United States was not behind the Soviet Union in the field of space exploration. With Seattle being home to Boeing, a major aerospace manufacturer, a forward-looking "Century 21 Exposition" would be the theme for the 1962 World's Fair in that city. With that vision towards the future, the fair needed a structure to rival those of past fairs like the Eiffel Tower and the Chicago Ferris Wheel. The answer was the Space Needle.
The Space Needle embodied the vision of the future. The slender tower reached 602 feet into the sky. Topping it, a two-story saucer complete with revolving restaurant seems to fly over the city like a space ship.
