Description
With a loud bellow, this alpha bull elephant seal lets everyone on the beach know to stay away from his harem.
Males start coming to the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery near San Simeon, California, each December. Here they claim, or try to claim, a piece of the beach. The alphas get control of a piece of the sand and the the females that arrive there. The rest are relegated to the outskirts and nearby beaches to spend the winter alone. These battles for dominance can lead to bloody battles in the surf, but most of the time all it takes is some posturing and bellowing from the large males to force the weaker males away.
Elephant seals got their name from the male's trunk-like proboscis, which the dominant males will inflate and use as a resonance chamber to enhance vocalizations during mating season.
