Description
Brown pelicans are found on both coasts of the United States and as far south as Ecuador. This large seabird is an excellent example of the benefits of environmental regulation. It was placed on the endangered species list in 1970 due to contamination from DDT. The pesticide caused their eggshells to be too thin, making the eggs unable to support the embryo to maturity. With the 1972 ban on DDT the Brown Pelican population rebounded, and in 1988 it was classified as a species of Least Concern.
