Description
The 1990s were a time of rail mergers in the US. Where there were once six Class I railroads serving the Western United States, only two remained by the end of the decade: Union Pacific and BNSF.
The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1996 to become the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company. With the new company came the need for new branding. Santa Fe's iconic silver and red warbonnets and Burlington Northern's Cascade Green were abandoned, and the company looked to the past for inspiration. The result was a resurrection of the orange and green colors off the Great Northern Railway, one of the original railroads that combined to form Burlington Northern in 1970. The new design included some elements of Santa Fe's logo as well. The look was updated in 1999, adding more “Santa Fe” elements such as an enlarged front logo reminiscent of that on their classic warbonnets and the yellow and black striping. That scheme was further updated with a simpler logo in 2005 when the company name was shortened to simply “BNSF Railway”
BNSF 5687 is a General Electric AC4400CW painted in the 1999 “Heritage 2” version. A GE ES44DC follows with the simplified 2005 design. This consist of three 4400 horsepower units is pulling an intermodal train over the snowy Tehachapi Mountains and into California's San Joaquin Valley.
