Artist's Description
Desert usually isn't the first thing people think of when talking about Oregon, but the locals will tell you that parts of the state could have easily been transplanted from Arizona.
The high mountains of the Cascade Range cause moisture in the air to fall as the rain the Pacific Northwest is famous for. East of the mountains, the rain shadow creates a much drier environment, which allowed the desert to expose 40 million years of world history at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
Colors in the soil reveal the history of central Oregon. Reds are signs that tropical forests once covered this now dry land. Tan layers are from cooler and drier periods. The black soil comes from manganese deposits left behind by vegetation.
About Darin Volpe

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
