This is the non-shiny side of a blue morpho butterfly in the butterfly enclosure at the San Diego Zoo Safari park. We happened to be there on the last day the butterfly exhibit was open.

I was curious - what happens to the butterflies when the exhibit closes? I asked and was informed that, while closed to the public, the butterflies remain until they all die of natural causes. Then, when it looks like they're all passed, the staff searches for any remaining live ones and if they find one they wait ten days and check again. This process continues until they're sure all of the butterflies have expired...then they turn the whole place into a bird habitat.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive.
