Description
I was photographing The Racetrack in Death Valley National Park when this photographer arrived all dressed in black.
Death Valley National Park is the hottest, driest, and lowest place in North America. In 1913 the temperature in Death Valley reached 134F (56.7C), holding the record of the highest ambient air temperature ever recorded on Earth. Summer temperatures of 120F are common. It was formed in 1933 as a national monument and was expanded became a national park in 1994.
The Racetrack is a dry lake in Death Valley National Park best known for its moving rocks. Scientists have been working since the 1940s to explain the long tracks left behind rocks weighing up to 700 pounds. The once favorite theory was that hurricane force winds pushed the rocks across the mud. Then, in 2013, a group of scientists observed the rocks moving, pushed by sheets of ice that formed under rare and ideal conditions. Instead of hurricane forces, the rocks were moved along by a mere 10mph wind.
