Description
The Archer on the hood of this 1937 Pierce-Arrow announced that the owner of this car would settle for nothing but the best.
Owning a Pierce-Arrow was a status symbol, with owners ranging from Hollywood stars to royalty. Unlike other automobile brands, there was no “lower-” or “mid-range” Pierce-Arrow. This, however, was a liability once the Great Depression hit. Unwilling to lower its standards and produce an inexpensive model, the company was not able to adapt to the new market conditions. The last Pierce Arrow was completed on May 13, 1938.
George Norman Pierce and his two partners began by making household items, including iceboxes, tin ware, and gilded birdcages. He bought out his partners in 1872 and soon started manufacturing bicycles and motorcycles, but eventually settled on becoming the premier automobile manufacturer in America.
The Pierce-Arrow Archer hood ornament was introduced in 1928, and went through several iterations by the time this 1937 Model 1701 Limousine was built.
