Description
Eyesore or art piece? That's been the question since the Vaillancourt Fountain was built in 1971. The 40-foot high fountain is made of precast concrete square tubes, and at the time it was constructed the double-deck Embarcadero Freeway, separated it from the waterfront. This made it almost appear to be a part of the freeway come to life. But after earthquake damage caused the freeway to be demolished and replaced by a wide boulevard critics called for its its dismantling, especially after it sat dry during and after the 2014 drought. It does have its supporters and so it still stands, once again flowing water to be enjoyed as designed.
