Description
The Legend of Multnomah Falls is the tale of how the falls formed after a young Native American maiden sacrificed herself to save her people.
The story tells that the daughter of the Multnomah Chief threw herself off the cliff as a sacrifice to the Great Spirit to save her people from a deadly sickness. She was successful, and as a sign to her father that she had been welcomed into the spirit world, a stream of water fell over the edge of the rock face.
Sadly, nothing could be done to save the Multnomah People from malaria and smallpox in the second part of the nineteenth century. By 1910 the few that remained were transferred to a reservation in northwest Oregon and today the Multnomah no longer exist as a distinct tribe.
Multnomah Falls is perhaps the most well-known waterfall in the Pacific Northwest. It is located just outside Portland in the Columbia River Gorge. The famous waterfall has been photographed almost since photography was invented, and long before the picturesque footbridge existed.
