The Coronation Library was the meeting place for the Literary and Scientific Institute (later renamed the Mechanics Institute,) an organization formed so the members could participate in activities aimed at mutual instruction and improvement. Designed by Samuel Farr, a Christchurch architect to had lived in Akaroa from 1850 to 1862, the building opened in May of 1875. In addition to serving the Institute, the building also served as a library. Needing repairs, it was remodeled in 1911 using funds available for a memorial for the coronation of George V. The foundation was raised, its roof repaired, and its frontage renewed. The redesign was in the style of an Arts and Crafts/English Domestic Revival. It currently houses a reference library maintained by a local trust.
