Description
Two wooden water tanks stand atop the city of Chicago.
The wood water tank was once an ubiquitous part of the Chicago cityscape, a product of the Great Chicago Fire. After the fire destroyed over two-thirds of the structures in the city in 1871, it was decided that every factory, warehouse, and public building would have its own means to fight fire. Swedish and German immigrant barrel makers built these tanks to sit atop the buildings as gravity-fed fire suppression systems.
Most still in place were built during the 1950's and they once numbered in the thousands. But by the mid 2013 they numbered at about 150.
