Description
Water that has fallen from where Latrouell Creek ran out of creek bed 224 feet above slows rather abruptly when it collides with the rocks at the waterfall's base.
Lower Latourell Falls is unique among the waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge in that the water falls straight down, with no contact at all with the Earth at all until it crashes into the rocks below.
The basalt rock at the foot of the falls has eroded over time, leaving fascinating jagged fractures and deep channels where the runoff makes its way back to the main creek and onward to the Columbia River.
