Artist's Description
A Rosy Rockfish maneuvers through the reef in the 100,000 gallon Northern California Coast Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences.
There are more than 100 species of rockfish that come in different shapes, sizes, and color patterns. They are one of the longest-living fish species, with species in the Gulf of Alaska living up to 200 years. They don't breed until age 20 and have few young, which makes them vulnerable to overfishing.
The California Academy of Sciences is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. Located in San Francisco, California, it houses over 26-million specimens. It is California's oldest operating museum and research institution for the natural sciences, having been started in 1853. It moved to its permanent location in Golden Gate Park in 1916. The buildings suffered significant damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and in 2008 they were replaced by a new 400,00 square foot building.
About Darin Volpe

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
