Description
The grade crossing in Caliente is near the exit of a sweeping horseshoe curve where trains make a 180-degree turn. There's hardly any straight track between Tehachapi and Caliente. The trains descend almost 2,600 feet in less than 30 miles, quite the grade for a railroad, so the tracks wrap around hills and follow the edges of mountains to keep that grade at a manageable 2.2%. This train has made the trip in just over four hours, and still has another 1,000 feet to descend before it gets to Bakersfield 20 miles down the track.
