Artist's Description
Just because it's called a terrestrial garter snake doesn't mean it's confined to the land. This one was quite at home swimming in the Kings River near Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park.
Snakes use their tongues to collect the chemicals in the air, which they move into their mouths. The inside of their mouths have an organ that collects these chemicals and sends signals to the brain, much like chemicals enter our noses to be collected for our brains to interpret. By having a forked tongue, snakes can determine which direction those chemicals are coming from.
About Darin Volpe

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
