This retired Santa Fe Railway boxcar sits on a ranch in central California. It's 1960's era paint scheme reminds us that before Amtrak was formed in 1970, railroads used their freight cars as traveling billboards for their passenger service. Here, we're told "Ship and Travel Santa Fe - All The Way."
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was chartered in 1859. It was one of the larger railroads in the United States, formed to join Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, with Santa Fe, New Mexico. However, the terrain was too difficult to build a railroad into Santa Fe and it only reached as close as Lamy. To create demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farm land from the land grants that it was awarded by Congress. In 1995, the AT&SF merged with Burlington Northern Railroad. The new Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway became the second largest freight railroad in North America.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
