Description
Is the circle a water source? Hunting grounds? Do the feet show the way? Or is it simply the doodles or graffiti left behind by bored or tired ancients? We will probably never know the meaning of the ancient petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock State Historic Park.
Newspaper Rock State Historic Park is located in southeastern Utah and is one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs in the world. Petroglyphs are created by carving into a rock surface, as opposed to petrographs which are drawn or painted on a rock face.
These etchings in the sandstone record approximately 2,000 years of human activity, including the Ancient Pueblo, Archaic, Basketmaker, and Fremont cultures. It also includes inscriptions from modern Americans with some pieces dated from the first half of the 20th century.
