Description
A place straight out of a National Geographic Special, the elephant seal rookery near San Simeon, California is a must-see stop for anyone driving the Pacific Coast Highway.
They started to come ashore at what is now the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery in 1990. As word spread of these fascinating creatures, visitors to the beaches north of San Simeon would climb down the bluffs to observe and photograph them, even approaching to within a few feet of the animals. In an effort to protect the animals, both elephant seal and human, a viewing boardwalk was constructed in 1997.
Estimates presently put the colony's population at around 25,000 individuals. Their activities range from lounging on the beach, to giving birth, to bloody fights. These two juvenile elephant seals are practicing for a future where they will battle for dominance and the right to mate as the alpha of the beach.
