Standing guard over his prized bottle of nectar this Anna's Hummingbird waits, his beautiful helmet of feathers reflecting in the afternoon sunshine. If any rivals attempt to steal a sip he will take to the air to drive them away, then return to stand guard again.

Anna's Hummingbirds are common along the western United States, Canada, and northwestern Mexico. The males' iridescent head feathers shine vibrant red when struck by direct sunlight.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
