For several minutes you hear the whining of the dynamic brakes that keep the train from rolling out of control as it makes its way down the the steep grade through the Tehachapi Mountains. You look back the way you came and see it up on the side of the hill as it approaches town. Soon it is crossing the bridge over the road that got you here, then it begins its turn to the left as it starts to circle around you. You hear the horn, the bells on the crossing start to ring, lights flash, and the gates slowly descend. Seconds later the train gets to the crossing in front of you as it comes out of the horseshoe curve. You look to the left and can see both ends of the train. It's practically surrounding you. The locomotives and a mile of cars are heading away from the crossing on the long straightaway, and another mile of train running parallel, still coming down the hill.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
