Description
Detail of the tiles that make up the sails of the Sydney Opera House
Designed by Jtzon, a Danish architect, construction started on the Sydney Opera House in 1959 and was completed in 1973. The design of the concrete "shells" was one of the earliest uses of computers for structural analysis, used to understand the forces they would be subject to. Although appearing white from a distance, the structure is covered with over one million tiles in two colors, glossy white and matte cream. The entire structure covers 4.4 acres of land, is 600ft (183m) long and 394ft (120m) wide at its widest.
It is identified as one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and is one of the most famous performing arts centers in the world, and became a UNESCO world heritage site in June of 2007.
