Description
If it looks like The Jetsons should be living here, it's because one of the design artists for the 1960's cartoon drew inspiration for their apartments of the future from this Seattle icon.
The 1962 Word's Fair needed a spectacular structure to go with it's theme, "The Age of Space." Painted in such colors as Astronaut White and Re-entry Red, the Space Needle would be the perfect representation. In only a year, a 120 by 120 foot plot of land was purchased and the tower was erected, the last elevator car installed they day before the fair opened. The 605-foot tall structure is topped by a revolving restaurant that gives guests 360 degree views through floor-to-ceiling windows of downtown Seattle, Puget Sound, Mount Rainier, and the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges.
The futuristic design of the Space Needle is among the most recognizable structures in America. The tower was renovated in 1982, 2000, and again in 2017 to include several features of the original design that were not included, such as the SkyLine level at 100 feet and floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant.
