Description
For the amazingly low price of $23,000 you could walk in off the street and leave the dealership with a beautiful 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Town Car. Of course the average income at the time was $1,368 and unemployment was at 18.26%, but that didn't stop film star Constance Bennett from laying down the equivalent of $410,873.33 at the 1936 New York Auto Show for this beauty.
At the time, automobile manufacturers built the chassis and mechanical parts of the car and the bodies were built by a coachbuilder selected by the owner. As the name implies, coachbuilders began as manufacturers of horse-drawn coaches. As the market for that particular mode of transportation evaporated many switched to making bodies for the fledgling automobile industry. The body on this car was provided by Brewster & Co.
