Description
The chase has been going on for eighteen months. The last time the moon covered the sun completely was on March 9th, 2016 when it cast a shadow across the South Pacific. Twice since it had almost caught its quarry, but it was too far from the Earth to completely block out the photosphere. On the 21st of August, 2017, the chase was over. As a place called America passed below the moon finally caught up, and for a brief moment it took the sun from the day.
The 2017 total solar eclipse was visible from Oregon to South Carolina. Partial eclipses were seen throughout North America. This photo was taken in Independence, Oregon, as the moon moved to obscure the sun just before totality.
