The Union Pacific Tehachapi Pass line between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert in California see trains climbing 3,620 feet from the Bakersfield to the summit near Tehachapi and then descending 1,300 feet by the time it reaches Mojave. The average grade between Bakersfield and the summit is 2.2%, meaning the tracks rise about 2-1/4 feet for every 100 feet of horizontal track. Pulling heavy trains over steep grades takes a lot of power. Lash-ups of modern locomotives like these General Electrics, combined with helpers pushing from the back and even sometimes added to the middle of the train, make it possible to move trains of two miles or longer over these steep grades.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
