Artist's Description
I love the look on the male grebe on the right. "Better than the deed, better than the memory...the Moment of Anticipation!"
This pair of Western Grebes has just finished their elaborate courtship dance and is ready to get down to business. The female sits on her nest, a floating mass of weeds that's tethered to the lake floor by underwater vegetation, and the male approaches from behind. After several minutes with her sitting on the nest and him swimming nearby, he makes his move.
