Description
Trees close in on an abandoned bridge in the Washington forest. Moss covers the railings that 90 years before were fresh concrete on the nation's newest highway.
Imagine this scene: A shiny new 1931 Ford Model A crosses a bridge on the new Olympic Loop Highway, carrying a family from Seattle on a trip through the wondrous land of the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington state. The highway made it possible for anyone with an automobile to visit the region's extraordinary scenery of the Olympic Mountains and the Pacific Coast. But as time brought more tourists and the towns got larger, the old road just wasn't up to the task. It was eventually moved about 1000 feet south and the old highway bridge was abandoned
This bridge, where US101 crossed Beaver Creek near Sapho, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula, was part of the original alignment of US101 on the Olympic Loop Highway. For now it stands as an interesting landmark, but the early 20th century concrete structure will eventually be overrun by the forest.
