"O please, Lord, may there be an abundance of sea urchins in the kelp below, and may the abalone not be too hard to pry from the rocks..."
Sea otters eat a variety of invertebrates such as sea urchins, sea stars, crabs, clams, mussels, abalone, and squid. They are the only marine mammal who catches food with its front paws instead of their mouth They are one of the only mammals to use tools to obtain and eat their food and can often be seen using a rock to break the open shells of their prey while laying on their backs on the surface of the water.
Southern Sea Otters are also known as California Sea Otters. They are among the smallest of marine mammals, and unlike most other marine mammals they rely on their dense, water resistant fur instead of subcutaneous fat. This gives them their cute and fuzzy appearance that makes them one of the star attractions in the harbor at Morro Bay, California.
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
